The Anambra State Police Command has cautioned residents against resisting arrest, even in situations where they believe the arrest may be unjustified, stressing that such actions could worsen security situations and endanger lives.
The warning was issued in a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga on Sunday, amid growing concerns over confrontations between civilians and security operatives during arrest operations.
According to the command, attempts to obstruct or resist arrest often lead to avoidable violence, injuries, and breakdown of public order. The police advised residents to remain calm and pursue legal means of seeking justice if they feel wrongly treated by officers.
The statement partly read: “The command advises members of the public not to resist arrest or obstruct police personnel in the discharge of their lawful duties, even when they feel such arrest is unwarranted. Such situations should be addressed through lawful procedures.”
The police further explained that resisting arrest could complicate investigations and create unnecessary tension between law enforcement officers and members of the public.
Residents were encouraged to cooperate with officers and report any misconduct through appropriate complaint channels instead of engaging in physical confrontations.
The development has generated reactions online, with some residents expressing concern over alleged abuse of power by security operatives, while others argued that compliance during arrests could help reduce violent encounters and preserve public safety.
