The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the alleged killing of University of Jos student, Ibrahim Mbaye, who reportedly died after being attacked by a mob over claims that he stole an iPhone.
In a statement released on Monday, NANS National President, Akinteye Babatunde, described the incident as tragic, insisting that no accusation should ever result in mob action or extrajudicial punishment.
According to Babatunde, Mbaye was allegedly beaten by a group of people, publicly humiliated and later confined in a room. He noted that the phone at the center of the accusation was never found on the deceased.
“It is deeply heartbreaking that a promising young student had to lose his life in such a cruel and senseless manner. No allegation, regardless of its nature, justifies mob violence or extrajudicial punishment,” he said.
The student body also acknowledged reports that security operatives had arrested some suspects in connection with the incident.
“I am, however, encouraged by reports that some of the suspects have been arrested. We have repeatedly warned against taking the law into our own hands. Such acts have no place in our campuses or society and must be condemned by every student and every well-meaning Nigerian,” Babatunde added.
He expressed sympathy to Mbaye’s family, friends and the University of Jos community, praying that they find the strength to cope with the loss.
Babatunde further urged law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough, impartial and speedy investigation, stressing that everyone linked to the incident must be held accountable.
“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, as this will serve as a deterrent to anyone who believes violence is an alternative to due process.
“No student should ever lose their life to jungle justice,” he said.
