A 45-year-old Nigerian man, Obinwa Obichukwu, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman twice at London’s Euston railway station.
The conviction followed an investigation by the British Transport Police, which announced the outcome in a statement published on its website on Tuesday.
Obichukwu, who lives on Armstrong Close in Hertfordshire, was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on July 21. He had earlier been convicted in January on two counts of sexual assault.
Beyond the custodial sentence, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order on him and directed that he remain on the UK’s Sex Offenders Register for the same period.
According to investigators, the incident happened on the evening of August 20, 2023. The victim was walking towards Euston station when Obichukwu approached her and struck up a conversation by asking what music she was listening to.
Police said he then placed his arm around her shoulder and repeatedly asked her to go home with him. As they continued along Euston Road, he allegedly grabbed her hand several times while telling her he loved her.
When the woman attempted to enter the station, Obichukwu reportedly blocked her path and sexually assaulted her at the entrance.
The victim managed to continue into the station and headed down the escalator towards the London Underground platforms. However, investigators said Obichukwu followed her and sexually assaulted her again near the ticket barriers.
She eventually broke free, pushed him away, and fled the station before reporting the incident to the authorities.
Following the report, British Transport Police officers identified Obichukwu through their investigation and arrested him at his home.
The police said the victim’s account, together with CCTV footage from the station, provided sufficient evidence for the Crown Prosecution Service to approve two charges of sexual assault.
Reacting to the verdict, Detective Constable Daniel Burke described Obichukwu as a “sexual predator” who deliberately targeted a woman who was alone.
“Obinwa Obichukwu is a sexual predator who targeted a lone woman and attacked her at a busy London station.
“He claimed his assault was consensual and took his case to trial, but fortunately the jury saw straight through his lies and he’s now behind bars where he belongs.
“Tackling violence and intimidation against women and girls is a priority for us as a force and we’re tireless in our efforts to bring offenders like Obichukwu to justice.
