The Federal Government has said there are no plans to increase electricity tariffs beyond the current rates, assuring Nigerians that its immediate focus is on improving power supply and expanding access to electricity rather than imposing higher charges.
The assurance was given by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, in a statement shared on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the minister, the Tinubu administration is prioritising reforms that will improve service delivery, ensure universal metering and guarantee that consumers are billed only for the electricity they actually use.
“There is no policy by this administration to increase electricity tariffs beyond its current level. Our priority is not tariff increase in the immediate term,” Tegbe said.
“Our priority is service improvement, universal metering and ensuring Nigerians pay only for the electricity they actually consume.”
The minister also disclosed that the Federal Government would continue to explore measures to protect vulnerable electricity consumers while strengthening the financial viability of the nation’s power sector.
“Indeed, the Federal Government will continue to examine additional mechanisms for protecting vulnerable consumers whilst simultaneously improving the financial sustainability of the market,” he said.
Tegbe noted that the ongoing reforms in the electricity sector are focused on delivering practical results rather than making promises, stressing that the success of the government’s efforts would be measured by the impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
“Resetting the sector is not about buzz words. It is about execution, discipline, coordination, measurable outcomes. We will measure our outcomes by improvements experienced in the daily lives of Nigerians,” the minister stated.
He added that the administration remains committed to building an electricity sector that is reliable, competitive, sustainable and accessible to all Nigerians.
“Our ambition is clear. Reliable electricity that powers our homes. Competitive electricity that powers our industries. Sustainable electricity that attracts investment. Inclusive electricity that reaches every Nigerian,” Tegbe said.
