His Excellency, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has consistently demonstrated the hallmark of a true visionary leader. This can be seen in his ability to not only see the potential of our state but also the unwavering commitment to bringing that potential to life. His Excellency is meticulously building a better future, as evidenced by his profound investments in education.
It is this deep interest and practical disposition that drives his commitment to seeing that the proposed establishment of the University of ICT Oferekpe and the University of Aeronautic Engineering Ezza was not an idea left in the realm of dreams. In fact, his dedicated efforts at ensuring the take-off of academic activities at the universities favoured the state at the instance of the federal government policy of regionalizing the National Institute of Aviation. The institute would now be sited at the University of Aerospace and Aeronautic Engineering Ezza.
If one asks why the establishment of more universities when we already have the Ebonyi State University, the answer would include the fact that having more universities can be a powerful catalyst for growth and innovation, creating a vibrant ecosystem that benefits both the institutions themselves and the surrounding communities. The presence of numerous universities fosters a competitive environment, driving each institution to strive for academic excellence, attract top-tier faculty, and offer cutting-edge programs. This competition ultimately benefits students who have a wider range of choices and can access diverse educational opportunities tailored to their specific interests. A concentration of universities cultivates a rich intellectual atmosphere, encouraging collaboration, interdisciplinary research, and the free exchange of ideas. Collaborative projects are more likely to flourish in such a state, leading to breakthroughs in various fields and contributing to the state’s reputation as a hub for knowledge and innovation. This, in turn, attracts businesses, particularly in the technology and research sectors, creating jobs and boosting the local economy.
By their specialized nature, the University of ICT Oferekpe and the University of Aerospace and Aeronautic Engineering Ezza are like an idea whose time has come. In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, a University of ICT is not just a desirable institution but a vital engine for national and regional progress. With emphasis on providing focused education and research in areas like software development, cybersecurity, data science, artificial intelligence, and network engineering, a dedicated ICT university directly addresses the growing demand for tech professionals across various industries.
On its part, the University of Aerospace and Aeronautic Engineering Ezza will play a crucial role in advancing the frontiers of knowledge in the field of aerospace. It will be a hub of innovation, research, and development that directly impacts the future of flight and space exploration. By offering specialized curricula, it will equip students with the deep knowledge and technical skills necessary to design, build, and maintain aircraft, spacecraft, and related systems. This university will boost activities at the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo International Airport and its environs. What is gladdening is that everything will be happening in the name of our beloved state, EBONYI.
Just recently, the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) presented a certificate of recognition to Ebonyi State University of ICT, Oferekpe, as the 66th state-owned university in Nigeria. Meanwhile, academic activities are expected to commence at an already designated temporary site, while construction works are ongoing at the permanent site of the university.
His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru bears the true meaning of preparedness and proactivity and is indubitably moulding Ebonyi’s tomorrow today.
Engr. Jude Chikadibia Okpor, Honourable Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Ebonyi State.
