Edo 2024: Andrew Edeki Escapes Assassination, Flee for Safety
The aftermath of the September 21, 2024 Edo State governorship election has not only left many people dead, homeless and gone into hiding, but it has also led to some running away from the shores of the country as a result of attempts on their lives.
This isn’t only about the outcome of the election, but also as a result of certain classified reports shared on their respective news and program platforms. Amongst these individuals who have taken to their heel is the popular radio presenter and stand-up comedian, Andrew Edeki, popularly known as “MC Kpogidi”.
There was news of the listeners’ friendly Current Affairs producer and presenter leaving the scene; many had wondered where he could have been after reported stories of his ordeals in the hands of political thugs in the state. Reports emanating from reliable sources, however, suggest that the radio presenter left the scene to run for his life.
Fleeing to an unknown destination for the safety of his life is connected to situations he reported on his “Area Parliament Show” concerning the shootings that took place at the Benin Airport gate when the Edo State incumbent governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo and other high-ranking politicians were shot at, leading to the death of a police officer. The presenter because of his unbiased reportage, without fear or favour, mentioned the names of the identified thugs who carried out the operation.
Additionally, “Kpogidi” aired on his show the recorded voice of former governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, who threatened to burn down Nigeria a few days after the airport gate incident. There were also reports of the presenter being hunted down on his radio show when unidentified men disguised themselves as guests on the show only to try to hurt him. Luckily for him as they entered the studio, there was a power failure which aided his escape.
Another report had it that MC Kpogidi was also attacked by unknown armed men who almost had him killed in a Toyota Yaris hired car along Benin-Sapele road on the evening of Thursday, September 26, around 7:30 pm, returning home after one of his radio shows, some days before the election, but he narrowly escaped the attack. Witnesses who pleaded anonymity recounted that it took some commuters to intervene in the matter and have him set free from men who appeared to be officers of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) — it was one of the association’s plans to have him taken away as a result of his approach in addressing current affairs situations in the state.
Before the attack on the Sapele Road, Andrew had been hunted down at his radio studio at Nova Road at about 6:30 to launch an attack on him, but his escape was aided by a power outage although a colleague of his — who pleaded anonymity — in the studio witnessed their attack and their intention to inflict harm on the presenter.
Andrew Edeki was a thorn in the flesh of the government with his unbiased reportage, situation reports, project inspection reports, election coverages and others. This must have led to the government of the time, using faceless individuals to hunt for the broadcaster’s life.
Andrew had initially escaped to the neighbouring state — Delta — for the safety of his life but was also attacked there by the local thugs connected to the Edo state thugs who have been hunting him for weeks. Looking for another place of safety, he ran to Lagos, which he believed would have been safe for him. Just a few days after arriving in Lagos, he met with a young lady who, disguised using a nose mask and wearing a hoodie, approached him and quietly told him that his time was up as they would be coming for him in days and had him. According to Andrew, the shocking part was that the unidentified lady told him no matter where he ran to in the country and neighbouring countries, he would be hunted down because he had stepped on the toes of the powers that be, for revealing too much about their activities.
Since then, Andrew Edeki has been in hiding for months in an unknown destination since late 2024, according to reports.
