Nigerian Correctional Service has cleared that inmates across centres in Nigeria are not being poorly fed as against the claim making rounds.

Referring to the allegations as ‘misleading’ and ‘untrue’, the Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, in Abuja, on Tuesday, during an interview said it doesn’t present the service well.

According to Umar, all inmates across all correctional centres in Nigeria are entitled to three square meals everyday.

He further cleared that the Federal Government provides enough funds for the feeding of those in custody and they are always used for the right reasons for which they were disbursed.

“The Federal Government allocates funds specifically for the feeding of inmates, and the process is strictly monitored to ensure compliance with established standards.

“The allegation that inmates are dying of hunger is unfounded. There is no record in any of our custodial centres that inmates are being starved or dying because of inadequate feeding.

“It is completely false to insinuate that inmates are left to starve or that hunger is leading to deaths within our facilities.

“We want to assure the public that inmates are properly fed and their welfare remains a top priority for the Nigerian Correctional Service,” he said.

On the other hand, the spokesperson also specified that the centres always have entry protocols and noted that the statement that a journalist interviewed inmates was fabricated.

“Even cameras and mobile phones are prohibited because of the risk of concealed recording. So, for anyone to say they interviewed inmates inside a custodial centre is nothing but a fabrication.

While he reaffirmed the service’s commitment to the welfare, reformation, and rehabilitation of inmates in line with international best practices, Umar noted that Tinubu’s administration has improved centres’ funding over time.
