Rivers, Benue, Akwa Ibom Lead In HIV Cases, Ebonyi Position Revealed – NACA Report

Rivers, Benue, and Akwa Ibom states have emerged with the highest numbers of people living with HIV, according to the latest 2024 estimates from the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

Out of over 2 million Nigerians currently living with HIV, Rivers tops the chart with 208,767 reported cases. Benue follows with 202,346, and Akwa Ibom with 161,597.

Lagos ranks fourth with 108,649 cases, while Anambra and the FCT report 100,429 and 83,333 cases respectively. Other high-burden states include Delta (68,170), Imo (67,944), Enugu (61,028), Edo (60,095), and Taraba (58,460).

Mid-tier prevalence states include Abia (54,655), Kaduna (54,458), Kano (53,972), Plateau (51,736), Borno (50,433), and Oyo (50,063). Cross River, Ogun, and Nasarawa also fall within this range.

Lower prevalence figures were recorded in states like Adamawa (40,059), Gombe (31,825), Jigawa (31,409), and Niger (29,756). Bayelsa reported 25,339 cases.

States with the lowest reported numbers include Kwara (20,259), Ekiti (18,857), Sokoto (15,223), Ebonyi (14,151), Zamfara (13,253), and Yobe (11,956).
