Sokoto Govt. Move to Ban Sales and Consumption of Alcohol in The State

The Government of Sokoto State has announced that it would curb the sales and consumption of liquor and other intoxicating substances within the state.

During the commissioning ceremony of the newly reconstructed Shagari Jumu’at Mosque on Friday, the state Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, made this declaration reaffirming his administration’s commitment to uphold public morality in the state.

Former Deputy Governor Mukhtar Shagari, officially commissioned the mosque.

The governor also commended the state’s Hisbah Board following a recent operation where large quantities of alcohol were seized and destroyed. However, he urged the board to make sure they are discharging their duties within the confines of the law and with full respect for human rights as he urged the general public to cooperate with them.

“I commend the Hisbah Board for its relentless efforts in sanitizing our society and eradicating social vices,” he said

On religious infrastructure, Governor Aliyu disclosed that a total of 63 Jumu’at Mosques are currently undergoing reconstruction across the state.

As he went further to implore the Shagari Jumu’at Mosque’s management to maintain the facility and ensure it is clean and properly used —Aliyu disclosed that Imams, Deputy Imams, and Muazzins, now get monthly stipends from the Government along with regular allocations for mosque upkeep.

Additionally, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s focus on the execution of impactful projects across the state.

Meanwhile, during his remark, former Deputy Governor, Mukhtar Shagari, lauded Aliyu’s efforts in building standard infrastructures across the State. He said the historic mosque signifies the birthplace of the revered Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Gumi.
