Tinubu Approves N2bn to Enable Niger Flood Victims Restart Life
Nigeria President Bola Tinubu has approved N2 billion to be released to the victims of Mokwa Flood which took over 200 lives and destroyed not less than 503 houses. The president approved the fund to be used for the immediate reconstruction of the homes that were destroyed and enable the residents start a new life therein.
Disclosing this during his visit to the Mokwa community, Niger state on Wednesday, Vice President Kashim Shettima assured that the federal government is attentive to their needs and would rightly address their concerns as soon as possible.
Shettima stated that his visit to the community was by the instruction of the president. The vice president also disclosed that the president had directed the ministers for environment and state for agriculture to relocate to Niger to ensure immediate intervention under the ACRSAL project for drainage issues in Mokwa town.
He said; “The president specifically instructed me to come to Mokwa to commiserate with the people over the tragedy that befell the town. His heart is with the grieving people of Mokwa.
“All issues raised will be addressed by the federal government in collaboration with the Niger government.”
While he lauded the Deputy Governor and NEMA Director General for how they have collaborated and working greatly to bring thing snack to normalcy in the state. Shettima further stated that Tinubu had ordered 20 trucks of food items to be distributed to those who were directly affected by the flood, in collaboration with the village head of Mokwa.
The state deputy governor, Mr Yakubu Garba, in his remark, thanked the president for sending Shettima to them called on the federal government to look into their collapsed bridges due to the flood adding that the community needs ecological team to be deployed to handle specific areas that the flood affected, too.
“We need quick intervention, as the four collapsed bridges have cut down social and economic activities, especially in Rabba, as students cannot come to Mokwa when there’s rainfall; the bridge needs to be fixed,” he said.
In his remark, also, the Village Head of Mokwa, Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu thanked the federal government, on behalf of the residents, stating that they greatly appreciate Tinubu’s effort and were given hope by his approval of the fund and other support.
Since the flood disaster that displaced many, killed others and destroyed properties, several politicians and groups have sent in their prayers and support to the victims.
