A member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Eme Okoro, has declared support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, describing it as a credible platform to “take back Nigeria” in the 2027 general elections.
Okoro made the statement on Sunday in Ozuitem, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, during the formal unveiling of Dr. Emenike Onyebuchi Okoro as an ADC candidate.
He criticised the policies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of deepening poverty across the country. According to him, the ADC coalition represents a new political direction focused on improving the welfare of the majority of Nigerians.
Despite backing the coalition, Okoro clarified that he remains a member of the PDP, noting that there is no restriction against supporting a broader political alliance. He, however, admitted that the PDP has “lost touch with the people,” attributing its struggles to a disconnect from grassroots realities.
“We cannot fix a failing system by pretending everything is fine. The solution is to return power to the people,” he said.
Okoro also accused the APC-led federal government under Bola Tinubu of attempting to weaken opposition parties in a bid to create a one-party state, warning that Nigerians would resist any effort to undermine democracy. He stressed the need for free and fair elections in 2027.
He further raised concerns over reports that some citizens were allegedly coerced into surrendering their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and National Identification Numbers (NINs), warning that such actions could threaten democratic participation.
Speaking at the event, ADC candidate Dr. Emenike Onyebuchi Okoro said his decision to join politics was driven by a desire to implement real reforms, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare. He noted that meaningful change requires political power, not just professional expertise.
He pledged to prioritise grassroots development, agriculture, and improved living standards, adding that his organisation has already conducted needs assessments across communities in Abia State.
Also speaking, the ADC Chairman in Bende LGA, Pastor John Ukeh, urged young people to reject electoral malpractice and protect their votes in 2027. Lady Agnes Njoku, Principal of Uzuakoli Girls Secondary School, commended the candidate’s contributions to education, including scholarships and infrastructure support.
