Borno Military Attack: Army Denies Claims on Cause of General Braimah’s Death

The Nigerian Army has refuted reports claiming that Brigadier General Oseni Braimah died as a result of an unserviceable vehicle during the recent attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Army described the claims as false and misleading, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the senior officer’s death had been misrepresented.

The military said narratives circulating online were exaggerated and aimed at undermining its operations. According to the statement, “these narratives… are not only inaccurate but constitute a deliberate attempt to distort facts.”

It further clarified that only four personnel two officers and two soldiers lost their lives in the attack, dismissing other figures as unreliable. The Army added that “any contrary figure being circulated is entirely false… and devoid of credibility.”

Addressing the issue of equipment failure, the statement explained that the late brigade commander was operating a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle at the time of the incident. It noted that the vehicle was temporarily immobilised due to the intensity of the attack, not because it was faulty.

The Army also cautioned against the spread of unverified images and videos linked to the incident, warning that such content could mislead the public and create unnecessary panic.

The clarification follows the attack on the military base in Benisheikh, where troops engaged insurgents in a fierce battle.
