Leo Ekene Oketa, Special Assistant to the Governor of Ebonyi State on New Media, has been named 2025 S.A to the Governor of the Year at the Ebonyi Leadership Excellence Award, an annual recognition organized by NEWSMAXNG.

Oketa clinched the award after polling 11,234 votes, emerging tops among nominees following a highly competitive public voting process that reflected widespread appreciation for his contributions to governance communication, digital engagement, and public information management in Ebonyi State.

Since his appointment as Special Assistant on New Media in 2023, Leo Oketa has played a key role in strengthening the digital presence of the Ebonyi State Government, helping to bridge the gap between government and citizens through timely, accurate, and people-focused communication. His work has been credited with improving public access to government policies, programmes, and achievements across digital platforms, while also countering misinformation through disciplined and strategic messaging.

With a solid academic background that blends critical thinking and media expertise, Oketa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and a Master’s degree in Media Communication from Regents University, London. This foundation has continued to reflect in his thoughtful approach to communication, crisis management, and public engagement.

Before his current role, Oketa built a diverse professional career across finance, media, investigative public service, and government. He previously worked with Barclays Bank in the United Kingdom, African Free Press in Abuja, and the Federal Public Complaints Commission, where he was involved in public grievance resolution and administrative investigations. From 2019 to 2023, he served as Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, overseeing media relations and strategic communication for the legislative arm.

The award by NEWSMAXNG recognizes Oketa’s consistency, creativity, professionalism, and visible impact in advancing effective governance communication.
