Maiduguri, Borno State —The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a woman identified as Fatima Muhammed in connection with an alleged case of naira mutilation.
According to a statement issued by the anti‑graft agency, the arrest followed the circulation of a viral video on TikTok in which the suspect was seen cleaning mucus from her nose using a ₦500 note.
The EFCC’s statement reads in part:
“The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, April 7, 2025 arrested one Fatima Muhammed for an alleged Naira mutilation. The suspect was arrested following a viral video circulated on TikTok where she was seen cleaning mucus from her nose using N500 Naira note.”
Operatives of the Commission reportedly traced and apprehended the suspect within the Maiduguri metropolis area following the release of the video.
Fatima Muhammed is currently being held at the EFCC’s Maiduguri detention facility as investigations continue. The Commission stated that she will be charged to court once investigations conclude.
