FG to Bring Coventry University for Affordable UK Degrees in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has advanced plans to partner with Coventry University to establish a university campus in the country, in a move aimed at enabling Nigerians to earn internationally recognised degrees without travelling abroad.

The initiative, being driven by the Federal Ministry of Education, is part of a broader strategy to expand access to global-standard education while reducing the financial burden associated with studying overseas.

Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, disclosed that discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders in the United Kingdom, including university officials, investors, and development partners, to finalise arrangements for the project.

Under the proposed arrangement, a campus of Coventry University is expected to be sited in Alaro City, where it will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in fields such as science, technology, engineering, medicine, business, and vocational studies.

Authorities say degrees obtained from the Nigerian campus will be equivalent to those awarded in the United Kingdom, ensuring that students receive globally recognised qualifications while studying within the country.

The government noted that the initiative is designed to curb capital flight linked to education, as thousands of Nigerian students currently travel abroad annually in search of quality university education. Rising foreign exchange costs and tuition fees have made overseas study increasingly expensive for many families.

If approved by relevant regulatory bodies, admissions into the new institution are projected to commence between the third and fourth quarters of 2026.

Officials also highlighted that the partnership aligns with Nigeria’s push toward transnational education an approach that allows foreign universities to deliver their programmes in other countries. The model is expected to strengthen local capacity, reduce brain drain, and position Nigeria as a hub for international education and skills development.

While the plan has generated optimism among stakeholders, full operational details, including tuition structure and admission guidelines, are yet to be officially released.
