Omugo, Ifelodun LGA, Kwara State – Gunmen who kidnapped worshippers during a Sunday service at an Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) in Omugo, Ifelodun Local Government Area, have reportedly demanded a ransom of N1 billion for the release of the victims.
The Pastor-in-Charge of the church, Toba Omole, confirmed on Wednesday that eight members of the congregation, including his wife, remain in captivity several days after the attack. According to Omole, the kidnappers made contact with the community on Tuesday, briefly allowing families to speak with the abductees before presenting their ransom demand.
“This morning, we were able to hear from those who were abducted. I heard my wife’s voice and those of other members,” Omole said. “About eight of them are still in captivity, and the kidnappers have demanded N1 billion for their release.”
He described the demand as far beyond the means of the affected families and appealed to the government and well-meaning Nigerians for urgent intervention and support in negotiating the release of the victims.
“This is far beyond what we can afford. We are appealing for help, including efforts toward negotiation to secure their release,” he added.
The abduction has had a profound impact on daily life in Omugo, prompting many residents to flee amid fears of further attacks and perceived inadequate security. Reports indicate that by Monday, several homes in the community were deserted, and vehicles loaded with household items were transporting families to safer areas.
The security situation worsened on Wednesday evening when suspected bandits attacked Oro-Ago, a neighbouring community in the same local government area. The assault resulted in the death of a local vigilante commander and serious injury to another security officer, known as the Olu-òde, identified as Odeyemi.
The Kwara South Joint Security Watch coordinator, Elder Olaitan Oyin-Zubair, confirmed the attack, stating that the gunmen stormed the community, killed the vigilante commander, and shot the Olu-òde.
Residents said the recent violence has heightened tension across neighbouring towns, many of which are already reeling from the Omugo abduction. As of Wednesday night, the Kwara State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the incidents.
The recent attacks highlight persistent security challenges in rural areas of Kwara State. Residents are urging authorities to increase security presence and implement measures to prevent further bloodshed, restore public confidence, and protect vulnerable communities.
