Insecurity: Defence Minister Orders New Military Strategy After Attacks on Bases
The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd), has ordered a review and reorganisation of military operations in the North-West and North-East following recent attacks on military bases in the regions.
Musa issued the directive after a strategy meeting with the service chiefs in Abuja on Wednesday to assess the current security situation and review ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the country.
Speaking after the meeting, the minister assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remained resolute in their efforts to restore peace and security nationwide despite recent challenges.
He explained that the meeting focused on evaluating existing operational strategies and identifying ways to strengthen the military’s response to threats posed by terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.
According to him, although the military has suffered some casualties in recent confrontations with insurgents and bandits, security forces have also inflicted significant losses on the criminal groups.
Musa added that troops have intensified operations across different theatres, targeting the leadership and logistics networks of terrorist and bandit groups operating in the affected regions.
The defence minister also urged Nigerians not to be discouraged by misleading narratives circulating on social media, warning that such information could undermine the morale of troops engaged in frontline operations.
He called on members of the public to support the armed forces by providing timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in their operations.
Musa stressed that addressing insecurity requires the collective efforts of the military, other security agencies and citizens, noting that individuals who aid or support criminal groups would be treated as accomplices.
Recent weeks have seen renewed attacks on some military formations and communities in parts of northern Nigeria, prompting concerns over the activities of insurgents and armed groups in the region.
Security authorities say the operational review ordered by the defence minister is aimed at strengthening coordination among security forces, improving intelligence gathering and enhancing strategies to tackle insurgency and banditry in the North-West and North-East.
