Seyi Makinde has dismissed speculations about a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reaffirming his loyalty to the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Oyo state governor made this known on Monday while addressing PDP stakeholders from all 33 local government areas at the Local Government House Secretariat in Ibadan.
His clarification comes days after he, alongside Peter Obi and Seriake Dickson, visited Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kano—a meeting that sparked rumours of a possible political realignment.
Makinde, however, insisted that the PDP remains strong despite internal challenges and will actively participate in the 2027 elections.
“Those saying PDP will die are mistaken. The party will be on the ballot in 2027, and we will produce candidates for all elective positions. We will remain in PDP and win,” he said.
He called for unity among party members, urging stakeholders to resolve internal differences and embrace consensus-building strategies ahead of the polls. According to him, party leaders across various zones have been directed to convene meetings to address disagreements and strengthen cohesion.
The governor also announced automatic tickets for National Assembly members and first-term members of the State House of Assembly. He explained that while first-term lawmakers would be guaranteed tickets, returning members would be considered based on existing agreements, including rotational arrangements.
“We are preparing for a tough contest, but we are confident of victory. This is not just about 2027 it is about the future of democracy and generations to come,” he added.
Makinde further reassured party faithful that all aspirants in the state would contest under the PDP platform, stressing that unity and internal cooperation remain key to maintaining the party’s dominance in Oyo State.
