The National Association of University Students (NAUS), Edo State Chapter, has elected a new set of leaders to pilot the affairs of the association for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The emergence of the new executives followed the successful conduct of the NAUS Campus Monitoring Committee (CMC) Convention held on Saturday, 21 March 2026, at the Youth House in Benin City.
The convention brought together accredited student leaders and stakeholders from three major institutions in the state — Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma; National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Benin Study Centre; and the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin City. A total of nine delegates, with three representatives from each institution, participated in the electoral process.
At the end of the exercise, Comrade Joel Isaac Idahor of the University of Benin emerged as Chairman, alongside other executives who were either elected unopposed or through a consensus arrangement among stakeholders.
Proceedings at the convention began with the dissolution of the Convention Planning Committee (CPC) and the election of Comrade Ephraim Eghosa Osemwengie, National President of the Congress of NOUN Students (CONS), as Convention Chairman.
During the process, some aspirants stepped down from the race. A former chairmanship aspirant, Comrade Ebong Samuel Iyene of UNIBEN, withdrew to focus on his studies, while Comrade Agwu Ifeanyi Elijah of NOUN also stepped down from the treasurer race for personal reasons.
In a move to ensure unity, delegates from AAU and NOUN resolved a contest over the position of Director of Gender and Campus Affairs through harmonisation. The agreement saw AAU retain the position, while NOUN moved to the office of Director of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The only contested position during the election was that of Secretary General, which featured two candidates from the University of Benin. At the end of voting, Comrade David-Junior Okoedo-Okojie secured all nine votes cast, defeating Comrade Afesume Favour Ayodeji, who polled zero votes.
Following the outcome, Okoedo-Okojie was declared duly elected as Secretary General, while Afesume was subsequently appointed Director of Action and Mobilisation after consultations among stakeholders.
Other elected officers include Nathaniel Favour Tamara-Denbofa of AAU as Deputy Chairman; Enorense Osarodion Gracious of AAU as Deputy Secretary General; Emmanuella Nmesoma Anamalu of UNIBEN as Treasurer; Iyinbor Praise Ifechukwude of AAU as Financial Secretary; and Yusuf Abudushakur (AAU) as Publicity Secretary.
The convention also produced Omoaregba Daniel (NOUN) as Director of Sports and Social Duties, Sey Stephanie Maame-Esi (AAU) as Director of Gender and Campus Affairs, Eb Deborah (NOUN) as Director of SDGs, and Eloghosa Ozemwogie Obano (UNIBEN) as Director Of Special Duties & Transport.
The other officers are: Isibor Osamudiamen of UNIBEN as Director Of Health & Social Welfare, and Ederibhalo Ehigie Godsent of AAU as Director Of Science & Technology.
All elected officials were subsequently sworn into office in line with the provisions of the NAUS Constitution.
The event was observed by stakeholders and representatives of allied student bodies, including the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Edo State; the Congress of NOUN Students (CONS); and the Edo Youth Parliament. Security operatives were also present to ensure a smooth and orderly process.
