Nigeria Ranks 106th in 2026 World Happiness Report
Nigeria has been ranked 106th in the latest edition of the World Happiness Report 2026, reflecting a continued decline in the country’s overall wellbeing index.
The new position marks a drop from 105th place in 2025 and 102nd in 2024, underscoring a gradual but consistent slide in how Nigerians perceive their quality of life.
The annual report, published by the United Nations and its research partners, evaluates countries based on factors such as income levels, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.
Despite being Africa’s largest economy by population, Nigeria’s downward trend suggests persistent challenges in key areas that influence citizens’ wellbeing. Analysts point to rising living costs, economic pressures, and insecurity as some of the factors weighing on public sentiment.
Globally, Finland retained its position as the world’s happiest country for another year, followed closely by Denmark and Iceland, continuing the dominance of Nordic nations in the rankings.
Within Africa, Nigeria’s position places it behind several countries that have shown relative stability in governance and social support systems, though it remains ahead of others grappling with deeper humanitarian and economic crises.
Experts say the report does not only measure economic performance but also captures how people feel about their lives, making it a broader indicator of national progress beyond traditional metrics like GDP.
The latest ranking is expected to reignite discussions among policymakers and stakeholders on the need to address structural issues affecting citizens’ welfare, including job creation, security, and access to basic services.
The World Happiness Report 2026 is widely used by governments and development organisations as a tool for shaping policies aimed at improving quality of life and social wellbeing.
