Obi Warns Against One-Party State, Calls on Nigerians to Defend Democracy

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to resist any attempt to undermine the country’s democratic system, warning against the emergence of a one-party state.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi said members and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside other concerned Nigerians, are committed to protecting democratic values in the country.

“We, members and leaders of the ADC, and other well-meaning Nigerians, lovers of democracy, are saying that our democracy must not be killed,” he stated.

Obi stressed the importance of political plurality, declaring strong opposition to any move toward a one-party system.

“We say NO to a one-party system and for that today we’re calling out Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land,” he added.

The statement comes amid ongoing political realignments and discussions about the future of opposition parties in Nigeria. Obi’s remarks are seen as part of broader efforts to mobilise public support around democratic principles and encourage active citizen participation in governance.

Political observers note that his message may resonate with Nigerians concerned about political inclusiveness and the strength of opposition voices in the country.
