Peter Obi Welcomes Kwankwaso to ADC, Urges Unity Among Opposition

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for greater unity among opposition forces following what he described as a significant political development involving Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, Obi noted that the former governor Kwankwaso’s “decision to join our party marks yet another significant step in the collective effort to rescue and rebuild our democracy and dear nation, Nigeria.”

Kwankwaso officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday 30th of March, 2026.

Obi stressed the urgency of unity among political actors, saying, “this is the time for all opposition forces and well-meaning Nigerians to set aside their differences and work together in unity of purpose.”

Highlighting the current state of the country, he warned that “Nigeria is at a critical stage in its history,” adding that the situation demands “sacrifice, courage, and selflessness from all of us.” He pointed to key national concerns, including “economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and declining public trust,” noting that these challenges “require more than rhetoric” but instead call for “deliberate collaboration, disciplined leadership, and a shared commitment to national progress.”

The former Anambra State governor also urged a shift in the nation’s political culture, stating that Nigerians “must move beyond the politics of division, ethnicity, religion, and region,” and instead embrace “the politics of competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to a better Nigeria.”

According to him, the goal extends beyond electoral victories. “The task before us is not about winning elections alone; it is about rebuilding institutions, restoring confidence in governance, and securing a better future for our children,” he said.

Obi further called on Nigerians to see the present moment as pivotal, urging “all members of the opposition, and indeed every patriotic Nigerian,” to prioritize “unity over division, service over self, and nation over personal interest.”

He concluded on a hopeful note, declaring that “a new Nigeria is possible,” while emphasizing that achieving it would require collective effort, sacrifice, and sustained commitment to building “a just, equitable, and prosperous nation.”
