Troops under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have stepped up coordinated offensives against terrorist hideouts across Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states, killing at least six suspected bandits and recovering weapons and communication devices in operations carried out this week.
The Nigerian Army said the renewed push is part of ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable communities and break up criminal networks in the North-West.
In Sokoto State, soldiers of the COAS Intervention Battalion VII engaged terrorists in two separate encounters at Magonho Forest on March 25, killing three of them. The troops also recovered three AK-47 rifles and motorcycles during the operation.
In Zamfara, troops recorded multiple successes the same day. Along the Gada Maya–Makakari road, they laid an ambush that led to the killing of two terrorists, while others escaped. Items recovered include an AK-47 rifle, three magazines, 55 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, a Baofeng radio, two mobile phones, and a motorcycle.
Later, troops thwarted a retaliatory attack on Kaida Village, where gunmen had accused residents of working with security forces. One more terrorist was killed, and another rifle was recovered.
In a separate intelligence-led clearance operation in Dutsi Village, Moriki District of Zurmi Local Government Area, sustained pressure from troops forced fleeing terrorists to abandon weapons and ammunition.
In Kebbi State, troops acting on intelligence about the presence of the Lakurawa group in Giron Masa community, Shanga Local Government Area, encountered an ambush about 500 metres from the village. Despite the surprise attack, the soldiers held their ground until reinforcements and combat support arrived.
Speaking on the operations, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Olaniyi Osoba, said the successes reflect the military’s determination to dominate the battlespace and weaken terrorist capabilities.
“Our troops have remained resolute and undeterred in the face of provocation. The ongoing operations are a clear indication of our commitment to neutralising terrorist elements and restoring lasting peace across the North-West,” he said.
Osoba added that intelligence-driven efforts are ongoing to track down fleeing fighters, especially those involved in the Kebbi ambush.
“The morale of our troops remains high, and their actions continue to reflect courage, professionalism, and dedication to duty. We will not relent until these criminal elements are decisively dealt with,” he added.
The Army also reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging communities to continue sharing timely and credible information with security agencies.
