Senate Moves For Facebook, Tiktok, YouTube, Others To Establish Offices in Nigeria
Senator Ned Nwoko, representing the Nigerian Senate has passed a bill for major social media platforms and blogs to establish physical offices in Nigeria.
Aimed at amending the Nigerian Data Protection Act of 2023, the bill was first passed by senator Nwoko on November 21, 2024.
While Nwoko, during the senate meeting, argued that bloggers, Facebook, X, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, need to have a physical office to avoid local limitations and all.
Godswill Akpabio, the senate president, argued that establishing local offices for bloggers would not protect online expression like it should.
Senator Akpabio also moved for the bill to be passed round for the second time for thorough analysis by the Committee on ICT and Cyber Security.
