Don’t Use Our Uniform – Army Chief Condemns Harassing Civilians in Army Uniform

The Army Chief, Major General Gold Chibuisi, has frowned at the way some military personnels harass and assault civilians who wear the army uniform.

While urging the general public to stop wearing the uniform anyhow no matter how much they like or admire it, the Chief stressed that the Nigerian Army frowns at violence against offenders.

“It’s against the law of the land. If you are not in the armed forces, please don’t use our uniform, whether you love it or not.

“But that’s one part of it. Let people stop it. The other part is what we do, what our troops do when they see somebody dressed in a military uniform. You’re supposed to just get the person to remove it, arrest, and hand it over to the police, basically for persecution. All these other things that come with it are not right. And we are doing sensitisation on them,” he said.

Stating why it is necessary to respect the uniform, Chibuisi Stated that some criminals commit crime in the army uniform.

However, he also mentioned that army personnels who are guilty of assaulting or harassing civilians always get sanctioned.

Expressing hope for an improved relationship between the army and civilians, the Chief urged the public to see uniform men as part of their family.
