23-year-old student of the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus, Faith Ajoke Alayande, has died at the institution’s hostel in Victoria Island, Lagos after she allegedly jumped from a four-storey building.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, August 7, 2026, saying investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
The incident was reported to the Victoria Island Police Division by the Chief Matron of the hostel at about 6:30 a.m., following concerns over Alayande’s whereabouts.
According to the police, her hostel mate and a relative reportedly began searching for her after a note was discovered, before she was subsequently found within the hostel premises.
Police officers visited the scene after receiving the report, while Alayande’s body was later evacuated to a morgue for preservation.
The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident and said the investigation was ongoing.
The police are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death as inquiries continue.
The development has also left those who knew Alayande during her university years deeply saddened.
Uchenna Marvin, who said he supervised Alayande while she was an undergraduate, described her death as heartbreaking.
Marvin recalled that Alayande had previously taken part in academic discussions concerning the right to life and the right to die while working on a research project in Medical Law.
The former supervisor’s account has added to the sense of shock surrounding the death, particularly among those who knew her as a student.
Alayande had completed her university education before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School earlier this year.
The Lagos State Police Command said its investigation would determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
