Stop Unauthorized Phone Search and Arrests in Nigeria, IGP Orders Police
In a wireless letter with the date 13th December 2024, the Nigerian Inspector-General of police has ordered for the stop of unauthorized arrest and searche of the phones of citizens.
The IGP, Kayode Egbetokun also stated that any police officer reported to be engaging in these acts; unnecessary arrests, violation of human right and detention of citizens, as well as collection of phones and incessant searches, would be punished.
Furthermore, the supervisors and commissioner of police of the district and command would face punishment.
This decision is said to be as a result of the pressure which the IGP has been facing due to the acts and actions of the members of the police force across the country.
According to the wireless message which was addressed to the state commands and signed by the Department of operations for the force headquarters;
“The unlawful actions of some police officers is affecting the entire image of the Nigerian police force” police hierarchy pointed out.
With the title: “Order and Directives; Arbitrary Arrest and Detention”

A party of the warning as contained in the letter reminded the police of their actions in 2020 during the #endsars protest which took the life of many and urged them to strive to protect the image of the Nigerian police force.
