Ondo Correctional Officers Foil Drug Smuggling Attempt at Akure Custodial Centre
The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Akure. Officers discovered approximately four grams of Indian hemp concealed inside fresh tomatoes during a routine gate inspection.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by Chief Superintendent Oyewole Akinwumi, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, the drugs were “securely wrapped in water-tight nylon with the intent of being delivered to an inmate.”
The individuals involved were promptly arrested and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution, in line with directives from the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche.
Oyewole Charles (JP), Controller of Corrections for Ondo State, praised the officers on duty for their diligence and professionalism. He emphasized the Command’s commitment to maintaining secure and humane correctional facilities and reiterated that all forms of illicit drug trafficking within the correctional system would be firmly prevented.
The Command also issued a strong caution to the public, particularly visitors to correctional centres, warning that any attempt to compromise the safety and security of these facilities whether from inside or outside would not be tolerated.
