UI “Tsunami”: 226 Students Asked to Withdraw Over Low Grades
The University of Ibadan has directed 226 undergraduate students to withdraw from their programmes after recording a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.0.
The decision was taken at a Senate meeting held last Monday, where the results for both graduating and non-graduating students for the 2024/2025 academic session were considered and approved. As part of the resolutions, students who failed to meet the minimum academic requirement were advised to withdraw from the institution.
Following the Senate’s approval, the affected students have lost access to the university’s portal, effectively preventing them from proceeding with course registration.
Findings indicate that the withdrawals cut across several faculties and levels, from 100 to 500 level.
An official of the institution disclosed that the Faculty of Science recorded the highest number, with 79 students affected. The Faculty of Technology followed with 45 students, while 35 students were withdrawn from the Faculty of Agriculture.
The College of Medicine and the Faculty of Education each had 18 students on the list. The Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources recorded 10, while nine students were affected in the Faculty of Arts.
In addition, four students were withdrawn from the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences. The Faculties of Law and Environmental Design and Management recorded three students each, while two students were affected in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The exercise, which students have nicknamed “tsunami,” is a routine academic review conducted by the university. A similar exercise in 2018 saw 408 students asked to withdraw due to poor academic performance.
Meanwhile, fresh students for the 2025/2026 academic session resumed physically on campus on Monday, marking the beginning of a new academic year.
