Gunmen have attacked a church in Ekiti State, killing a pastor and abducting several worshippers during a service, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns over insecurity in the state.
The attack occurred in Eda Oniyo, in Ilejemeje Local Government Area, where armed men reportedly stormed a Christ Apostolic Church during an ongoing worship programme.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants invaded the church and opened fire on the congregation, causing panic as worshippers fled for safety. One account stated that the gunmen “stormed the church and opened fire on the congregation,” leading to chaos within the premises.
During the attack, the presiding pastor was reportedly shot dead, while an unspecified number of worshippers were taken away by the attackers.
Sources within the community said the gunmen operated for several minutes before fleeing into nearby areas, with some victims, including elderly members of the church, said to be among those abducted.
The Nigeria Police Force in Ekiti State has confirmed the incident, noting that security operatives have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators and are working to rescue those kidnapped.
The incident has left residents in shock, with growing fears over the safety of rural communities and places of worship amid rising cases of violent attacks and kidnappings.
