Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerian workers of the National Assembly’s commitment to improving their welfare, including plans to legislate for a living wage.
In a statement marking International Workers’ Day, Akpabio praised the resilience and dedication of workers, describing them as the backbone of the nation’s economy and democracy. He acknowledged the difficult conditions many workers face, particularly rising living costs and increasing workplace demands.
He said the 10th National Assembly recognises these challenges and remains committed to enacting policies that will improve workers’ welfare and dignity.
Akpabio stated that the Senate would prioritise legislative measures aimed at ensuring a living wage, safer working conditions, pension reforms, and job creation. According to him, these efforts are designed to protect the dignity of labour and strengthen Nigeria’s workforce.
He also highlighted the importance of workers across various sectors, including teachers, healthcare professionals, farmers, artisans, and civil servants, noting that their contributions remain central to national development.
The Senate President further called on employers in both public and private sectors to prioritise the wellbeing of their workforce, stressing that improved welfare is key to boosting productivity and economic growth.
Reaffirming the National Assembly’s position, he pledged continued collaboration with labour unions and other stakeholders to advance policies that would enhance workers’ living standards and ensure a more secure economic future.
He concluded by expressing optimism that ongoing reforms would enable Nigerian workers to look ahead with greater hope, dignity, and confidence.
