President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared insecurity and poverty as national emergencies, describing both as major threats to Nigeria’s stability, workforce, and economic growth.
The declaration was made during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration in Abuja, where the President, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, addressed labour leaders and workers. He stressed that no nation can achieve meaningful development when its citizens live in fear or struggle to meet basic needs.
According to him, insecurity continues to disrupt farming, businesses, and everyday life, while poverty weakens productivity and lowers the standard of living. He noted that decent work cannot thrive in an environment where workers are unsafe or unable to earn enough to sustain themselves.
To address these challenges, the federal government says it is rolling out a multi-pronged strategy focused on job creation, social protection, and security reforms. Among the initiatives highlighted is the Community Protection Guards programme, aimed at strengthening local security while creating employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
On the economic front, the administration pointed to interventions such as expanded cash transfer programmes for vulnerable households, support for small businesses, and large-scale infrastructure projects designed to stimulate growth and employment.
The President also referenced labour-related reforms, including the implementation of a new national minimum wage, settlement of pension arrears, and the reintroduction of gratuity payments, all aimed at improving workers’ welfare.
He called on labour unions to prioritise dialogue in resolving disputes, noting that strikes should be a last resort.
However, organised labour groups maintain that the country is still facing serious economic hardship and security concerns, warning that sustained and urgent action is needed to address the situation effectively.
Overall, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling these challenges and creating an environment where safe and decent work is accessible to all Nigerians.
