Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife have reportedly been abducted by suspected terrorists in Katsina State.
According to reports, the incident occurred along the Matazu axis while the retired military officer and his wife were travelling to Katsina. Armed men reportedly intercepted their vehicle and forcefully took the couple away.
Sources familiar with the incident said the attack happened in Matazu Local Government Area, one of the areas that has witnessed repeated attacks by armed groups in recent years.
A source said: “Major General Rabe Abubakar, former Director of Defence Information, was kidnapped together with his wife while travelling to Katsina.”
The retired general’s driver reportedly escaped from the scene despite sustaining a gunshot wound during the attack.
Reports further indicated that the officer’s vehicle, described as a red Peugeot 504, was later recovered and taken to the Matazu Divisional Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force.
Security sources also disclosed that an alert was circulated among military and security personnel following the abduction, urging relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward rescuing the victims.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Katsina State Police Command nor military authorities had officially confirmed the incident or released a detailed statement on the development.
The abduction has generated concern within security circles due to Abubakar’s previous role as one of the Nigerian military’s top spokespersons.
He served as Director of Defence Information and was actively involved in communicating military operations and security developments during his time in service.
