A Five-Year-Old reportedly set a duplex on fire in Illorin on Monday while he was playing with matches. This shocking incident happened in Abiodun Adebiyi, off Yidi Road, Irewole area in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State and had one of the rooms in the building completely burnt down including properties therein before fire service could arrive.

Confirming the ugly incident, the spokesman of the fire service in the state, Hassan Adekunle in a statement on Monday, said the fire escalated when a 5-year old boy who was playing with matches dropped it on a combustible material.

“On Monday, 3rd February 2025, at about 17:32 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service received a distress call regarding a fire outbreak at Abiodun Adebiyi Close, Off Yidi Road, Irewolede Area, Ilorin.

“Our gallant firefighters sprang into action, arriving swiftly at the scene to find one room in a five-bedroom duplex engulfed in flames.” He said.

Meanwhile, Adekunle said it was with sheer expertise and technical precision that the team were able to contain the fire and ensured it did not spread to other rooms or nearby houses.

Lanre Abdulrazaq, a witness who also spoke about the incident said he was doing menial job in the axis when the incident occured.

“We just noticed that thick smoke was oozing out of the building; we raised the alarm to sensitise people around for a rescue operation. We did not know the cause of the fire but later we saw the fire service who arrived and contained the fire.” Abdulrazaq said.

Prince Falade John, the director of the fire service in Kwara State advised parents to keep matches away from little children and urged the general public to prioritize fire safety.
