The Accord Party has affirmed former presidential candidate and businessman, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, as its flagbearer for the 2027 presidential election, officially positioning him among the early contenders in Nigeria’s next presidential race.
Olawepo-Hashim confirmed his presidential ambition after formally aligning with the party and commencing nationwide mobilisation efforts aimed at strengthening the Accord Party ahead of the general election.
Speaking on his political plans, the presidential hopeful disclosed that his movement had already attracted a significant number of supporters into the party.
“We have quietly mobilised about one million of our supporters into the Accord Party, and we are still doing so,” he said.
According to him, the mobilisation drive is part of a broader strategy to build what he described as a formidable political platform capable of providing Nigerians with an alternative leadership option in 2027.
Olawepo-Hashim also dismissed suggestions that the Accord Party would not field a presidential candidate in the next election cycle, insisting that no individual or political bloc has the power to determine Nigeria’s next president.
“The presidency of Nigeria is too big for anyone to allocate. It is in the hands of God and the Nigerian people,” he stated.
The former presidential candidate said his ambition would be driven by national unity, economic recovery and inclusive development, stressing that Nigerians deserve a credible alternative as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
In recent remarks, Olawepo-Hashim also expressed concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning against what he described as attempts to weaken opposition parties ahead of the next general election.
“We shall not be discouraged. We shall not be intimidated. We fought for democracy, and by the Grace of God, we will defend it,” he said.
