Bandits Attack School During WAEC Exam, Kill Vice Principal, Others in Kogi

Residents of Iluke community in the Bunu District of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, Kogi State, are demanding stronger security measures after armed attackers invaded the area, killing three people, including a senior secondary school administrator.

The attack, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday, left the community in shock and renewed concerns about the safety of residents.

Among those killed was Mr. Gani Anifowose, the Vice Principal of Government Secondary School, Iluke. Two other residents also lost their lives during the incident.

Witnesses said the assailants operated in the community for several hours, causing panic and forcing many residents to flee for safety.

Some locals claimed that several students who were preparing to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English Language paper were taken away by the attackers.

However, the Kogi State Government said security operatives prevented what could have been a large-scale abduction of students.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, the government disclosed that the attackers allegedly disguised themselves in military uniforms before carrying out the operation.

The statement confirmed that three members of the community were killed, but noted that swift intervention by security personnel helped prevent further casualties and rescued students who were reportedly being led into the bush by the gunmen.

“The unfortunate attack led to the death of three members of the community. Government extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the people of Iluke Community, and the entire Bunu District over this painful loss,” the statement read.

The government praised the efforts of soldiers, local vigilantes, hunters and other security operatives whose actions helped contain the situation and avert a larger tragedy.

According to Fanwo, preliminary reports indicated that the attackers disrupted an ongoing WAEC examination and attempted to abduct students before security forces confronted them.

Following an exchange of gunfire, all the students were rescued unharmed and returned safely to their families and school authorities.

The government further disclosed that one of the attackers was killed during the operation, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.

Security agencies have since intensified efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and ensure they face prosecution.

Authorities also assured residents that additional security measures are being considered to strengthen protection in the area. Community members were encouraged to remain vigilant and share useful information with security agencies.

The Kogi State Government expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
