The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a man identified as Salifu Olije Mustapha before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kubwa, Abuja, for impersonating officials of the anti-graft agency and using fake identities to defraud members of the public.
Mustapha was brought before Justice A.I. Akobi on Tuesday on a four-count charge bordering on impersonation, misrepresentation and fraudulent activities.
According to the EFCC, the suspect allegedly posed as both an EFCC operative and a Nigerian Air Force officer in separate incidents linked to fraudulent operations within Abuja.
One of the charges alleged that Mustapha, alongside two accomplices identified as Abubakar and Haruna Mamuda, dressed in EFCC operational uniforms and moved around Wuse II in a Toyota Corolla with registration number KTU399GT to deceive and extort unsuspecting residents.
The prosecution told the court that the suspects allegedly used the fake identities to intimidate motorists and carry out fraudulent activities while pretending to be law enforcement officers.
Another count stated that Mustapha falsely presented himself as an officer of the Nigerian Air Force and used the assumed identity to deceive members of the public for personal gain.
When the charges were read in court, the defendant pleaded guilty to all four counts.
Following his guilty plea, prosecution counsel R.U. Adaga urged the court to convict and sentence him in line with the provisions of the law.
Justice Akobi subsequently adjourned the matter until June 1, 2026, for sentencing.
The EFCC said Mustapha was arrested after intelligence reports linked him to impersonation activities in Abuja. Investigators reportedly caught him wearing a fake EFCC uniform alongside two other suspects while allegedly harassing and extorting motorists.
