FG Files 13-Count Charge Against Alleged Coup Plotters

The Federal Government of Nigeria has filed a 13-count charge against six individuals, including some retired military officers, over an alleged plot to overthrow the government and engage in acts of terrorism.

The charges, reportedly filed before the Federal High Court of Nigeria, accuse the defendants of conspiring to destabilise the country and unlawfully attempt to change the constitutional order. The suspects are said to be facing counts bordering on terrorism, illegal possession of firearms, and conspiracy to commit acts aimed at undermining national security.

According to details of the case, the accused persons were alleged to have held meetings and coordinated activities linked to the planned coup. Authorities claim that intelligence reports and preliminary investigations uncovered efforts to recruit associates and mobilise resources in furtherance of the plot.

Security agencies were said to have intercepted communications and carried out operations that led to the arrest of the suspects, as well as the recovery of materials believed to be connected to the alleged scheme.

The government maintained that the prosecution is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and ensure that individuals involved in acts threatening national stability are held accountable under the law.

Legal proceedings are expected to commence following the formal arraignment of the defendants, with the court set to determine the merits of the case in line with due process.
