FG Mourns Death of Ambassador-Designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele

The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, describing his passing as a significant loss to the country’s diplomatic community.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, officials confirmed that Lele died in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara after a prolonged illness.

The late diplomat, who was recently appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as ambassador-designate to Algeria following Senate confirmation, had not yet assumed his new role before his death.

Before his nomination, Lele served as Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Colleagues and officials described him as a dedicated and highly professional officer who contributed significantly to Nigeria’s foreign policy efforts.

Born in 1976 in Gamawa, he studied Economics at Bayero University Kano and joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001. During his career, he served in various diplomatic missions, including postings in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.

The ministry noted that his death represents not only a loss to his family but also to the entire foreign service and the nation at large. Senior officials who received his remains in Abuja described him as humble, hardworking, and committed to duty.

Lele was laid to rest in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites, while condolences have continued to pour in for his family, colleagues, and the government and people of Bauchi State.
