The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State has recovered a double-barrel gun from the scene of a road traffic accident along the Awka-Enugu Expressway.
The development was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by the Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri.
According to Ohaeri, the firearm was found on Friday at about 2:30 p.m. after an FRSC rescue team completed emergency operations at the crash site and began documenting the personal belongings of those involved.
He explained that the discovery highlights the broader role played by the Corps, noting that its operations not only focus on saving lives but also contribute to national security.
The statement read, “During the exercise, officers discovered the double-barrel gun concealed among luggage inside one of the crashed vehicles.
“In line with the Corps’ operational procedures and commitment to public safety, the rescue team immediately secured the firearm to prevent unauthorised access or possible misuse.
“No claimant came forward, and no valid documentation for the weapon was available at the point of recovery. The firearm was promptly handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and necessary action.”
Reacting to the incident, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed praised the rescue team for its professionalism, alertness and integrity.
He said the recovery further underscores the important role the FRSC plays in supporting internal security through its patrol and emergency response activities across the country.
Mohammed noted that although the Corps’ primary responsibility is to reduce road crashes, rescue victims and improve safety on Nigerian highways, its personnel often serve as first responders whose vigilance has led to the recovery of stolen vehicles, dangerous weapons and other security-related items.
He also reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to working closely with other security agencies to improve public safety, safeguard lives and property, and support national security efforts.
“We urge motorists and members of the public to remain law-abiding and promptly report any suspicious activities observed on the nation’s highways.
“The Federal Road Safety Corps reiterates its commitment to professionalism, transparency and inter-agency cooperation in the discharge of its statutory responsibilities.
