Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has called on United States President Donald Trump to pay attention to the upcoming Osun State governorship election amid concerns over possible violence and disruption.
Davido made the appeal in a post on X on Tuesday, urging the US and the wider international community to monitor developments around the election and encourage Nigerian authorities to protect voters.
He said growing political tension in the state had raised concerns about the possibility of violence, intimidation and interference with the electoral process.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process,” Davido wrote.
The singer said residents of Osun should be able to participate in the election without fear and have their votes properly counted.
“Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear,” he said.
Davido also urged the international community to closely watch the election, scheduled for August 15.
“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected,” he wrote.
According to the singer, the main concern should be preventing violence and ensuring that the election reflects the will of the people.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he said.
The latest appeal comes after Davido previously said he would seek Trump’s intervention if the Osun election was compromised.
During a live session with comedian Carter Efe, the singer had said he would involve the US president if anything went wrong with the electoral process.
Davido, who is a nephew of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has openly backed his uncle’s bid for another term in office and has repeatedly called for a peaceful election.
He had earlier urged politicians and residents of the state to reject violence, intimidation and provocation, stressing that the choice of voters must be respected.
The August 15 election will feature Governor Adeleke and other contenders, including the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and the African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam.
With political activities intensifying ahead of the poll, Davido’s latest intervention adds to calls from various quarters for an election that is peaceful, transparent and credible.
