The Nigeria Police Force has commenced investigation into a fatal shooting incident that occurred around the University of Benin axis in Benin City, Edo State.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the incident happened at about 5:00 p.m. on May 10, 2026, near the university’s main gate at Ugbowo.
Preliminary findings revealed that three occupants of a Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle — identified as Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu — were reportedly driving out of the university when another white GLK vehicle intercepted them.
Police said the occupants of the unidentified vehicle allegedly lowered their windows and opened fire on the victims before fleeing the scene to an unknown destination.
The attack left all the occupants with varying degrees of gunshot injuries. A female passerby identified as Dorathy Ubah was also reportedly hit during the incident.
Security operatives were said to have responded swiftly after receiving distress reports from the area. The victims were immediately rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.
However, doctors later confirmed Alexander Omogiate dead, while other injured victims are currently receiving treatment.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, has reportedly ordered a full-scale investigation aimed at identifying and arresting those responsible for the attack.
The Command also warned criminal elements operating within the state, especially around university communities, to desist from violent activities, insisting that security agencies remain committed to tackling crime and restoring public safety.
Police further appealed to members of the public with useful information regarding the incident to come forward, assuring that all information provided would be treated confidentially.
