The Sokoto State Government has approved N1.759 billion for the purchase of 1,000 Bajaj motorcycles to support security agencies in the state’s fight against banditry.
The decision was taken at the sixth regular meeting of the Sokoto State Executive Council for 2026, presided over by the Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammad Gobir.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Abubakar Bawa, said the motorcycles would provide additional mobility for security personnel, especially when operating in communities and terrains that are difficult to access with conventional vehicles.
The motorcycles are expected to complement 62 armoured vehicles recently acquired by the state government for N27 billion and distributed to security agencies.
Bawa said the latest procurement was part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the logistical support available to security personnel and improve their ability to respond to criminal activities.
He quoted the council as saying, “The procurement of the 1,000 motorcycles is aimed at complementing the recently procured armoured vehicles and enhancing the operational capacity of security agencies across the state.”
Beyond security, the council approved several projects covering education, healthcare, water supply and vocational training.
Among the approvals was N723.17 million for the renovation of Government Technical College, Runjin Sambo.
The council also approved N498.99 million for the rehabilitation of A.A. Raji Special School, while N489.32 million was approved for the renovation of Phase I of the College of Nursing Sciences.
Another N229.36 million was approved for the renovation of the male and female hostels at the College of Basic and Remedial Studies.
At the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Wurno, N174.64 million was approved for the renovation of staff quarters and the upgrading of the institution’s perimeter fence.
For healthcare infrastructure, the council approved N133.67 million for the construction of a perimeter fence at Wamakko Primary Health Centre.
It also approved N93.88 million to provide vocational learning equipment for 46 women’s vocational centres located across the state’s 23 local government areas.
In the water sector, N90.21 million was approved for the procurement of PVC pipes and plumbing fittings needed to maintain 142 semi-urban water supply schemes across Sokoto.
Bawa said the decisions reflected the state government’s focus on improving security while also addressing infrastructure and human development needs.
He added that the council meeting, which lasted about two hours, considered issues relating to the security and socio-economic development of the state.
“The government remains committed to implementing projects and programmes that will directly impact the lives of the people and contribute to the overall development of Sokoto State,” Bawa said.
