Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu, saying the President took over at a critical period and has introduced reforms aimed at rebuilding the country’s economy.
Okowa made the remarks in Asaba while hosting the national leadership of the Working People United (WPU), which paid him a courtesy visit.
According to the former governor, the Tinubu administration has begun tackling some of Nigeria’s major economic and political challenges through bold policy decisions.
He said the removal of the fuel subsidy, alongside other economic reforms, has significantly improved the financial situation of states and local governments.
“Outside fuel subsidy removal, he (President Tinubu) has grown the economy to the extent that local governments and states are now stabilised. They were not stabilised before now.
“By May 2023, no fewer than 27 states were owing salaries; they couldn’t pay workers, but today, all states and local governments are able to pay. It is not magic; somebody is behind it, and it is the courageous President Tinubu,” he said.
Okowa urged Nigerians to continue supporting the President’s policies, expressing confidence that another four years in office would allow Tinubu to deepen the ongoing reforms.
“We all know that if he is supported for a second term, the economy of this country will be refocused to the desire of the citizenry,” he said.
The former governor also highlighted the impact of the Federal Government’s National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), stating that more than 1.6 million students in tertiary institutions have already benefited from the programme.
He described the student loan initiative as one of the administration’s major interventions aimed at improving access to education while supporting broader economic recovery.
Okowa noted that many students who initially doubted the scheme have since enrolled and are now benefiting from it, encouraging others yet to apply to take advantage of the opportunity.
He maintained that President Tinubu should be given another term in office to complete the reforms already underway.
Expressing optimism about the future, Okowa said Nigerians would eventually appreciate the impact of the administration’s policies and called on members of the Working People United to back the President ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of the WPU, Comrade Williams Akporeha, said the delegation visited Okowa to brief him on the organisation’s activities and formally inaugurate its Delta State chapter.
Akporeha explained that the group consists of public and private sector employees, artisans and self-employed Nigerians.
He added that the organisation is committed to promoting good governance and pledged its support for Okowa’s senatorial ambition, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and President Tinubu.
