United States President Donald Trump has urged FIFA to consider awarding a future men’s World Cup exclusively to the United States, saying the country should host the tournament without Canada and Mexico.
Trump made the comments on Friday during a FIFA World Cup reception held at Trump Tower in New York ahead of Sunday’s final between Spain and Argentina. Speaking alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, he praised the competition before making his preference known.
“You should choose the United States of America again. This time we will leave Canada and Mexico out,” Trump said.
He also suggested that FIFA should allow another nation to host the tournament before bringing it back to the United States.
“Pick somebody else for the next one, and that will take some of the anger, hatred and steam out of everyone,” he added.
Trump further disclosed that Infantino had previously mentioned the possibility of a future World Cup involving both the United States and China.
“But Gianni also had another idea. He said we could do China and United States, so you have a nice short flight between games. The players would love that,” he said.
The next FIFA World Cup available for bidding is the 2038 edition.
FIFA has already confirmed the hosts for the next two tournaments. The 2030 World Cup will be staged primarily in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with opening matches scheduled for Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay as part of the competition’s centenary celebrations. Saudi Arabia has also secured hosting rights for the 2034 edition.
Based on FIFA’s continental rotation policy, member associations from North America and Oceania will be eligible to compete for the right to host the 2038 tournament, with the bidding process expected to begin in the coming years.
