Fresh controversy has erupted in Ebonyi State following the circulation of alleged private chat conversations purportedly involving former political associate Emeka Nwonu and Prof. Benard Odoh, with some Ebonyians now demanding explanations over alleged financial contributions made in connection with past political activities.
The controversy intensified after screenshots of what appeared to be conversations between Nwonu and Odoh surfaced online. The chats, which have not been independently authenticated, have triggered heated reactions across social media, with some individuals questioning the circumstances surrounding the alleged exchanges and the purpose of funds which they have contributed.
Some of those demanding answers have insisted that they want a full account of how their contributions were utilised while alleging that the donations must have running into millions of Naira.
In a statement making the rounds online, the aggrieved contributors said they had initially believed that Nwonu was facing financial difficulties in 2026, only to discover from the leaked conversations that some of the issues being discussed have dated back to 2020.
“We thought Emeka Nwonu was stranded in 2026, not knowing it’s a chat of 2020,” one of the aggrieved individuals was quoted as saying.
The group is now demanding the refund of all monies contributed, warning that failure to address their concerns could compel them to seek legal redress.
They reportedly claimed that the total amount involved could run into hundreds of thousands of naira, with some contributors insisting that they are prepared to present evidence of their payments and communications if the matter proceeds to court.
The development has generated fresh questions about the circumstances surrounding the leaked chats, the identity of the individuals involved and the financial arrangements allegedly referenced in the conversations.
However, the authenticity, context and timing of the leaked screenshots remain unclear, and neither the alleged contributors nor the persons purportedly involved in the conversations have, at the time of filing this report, publicly provided a comprehensive response to the allegations.
The controversy is expected to deepen as those demanding refunds insist that they are prepared to pursue the matter through legal channels if their demands are not addressed.
