The executive governor or Abia state, Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to achieving stable electricity supply across Abia State following a meeting with the management of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company.
In a statement shared on social media on Tuesday, Otti disclosed that he received the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NDPHC, Jennifer Adighije, alongside members of her management team during a courtesy visit to his office.
The governor commended the revival of the Alaoji Power Plant in Aba, describing it as a major step towards ensuring stable and uninterrupted electricity supply in the state.
According to Otti, the power plant currently supplies about 375 megawatts to the national grid following the restoration of operations, while plans are ongoing to increase its generation capacity to nearly 800 megawatts, with long-term projections targeting 1,100 megawatts.
He noted that electricity remains a key part of his administration’s economic and development agenda, stressing that reforms introduced since he assumed office are aimed at strengthening power generation and distribution within the state.
“Electricity remains central to our vision for economic growth and social development. Since assuming office, our administration has prioritized reforms in the power sector, from ring-fencing the Aba industrial cluster to concluding arrangements for acquiring the Umuahia electricity axis of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). These steps will place generation, regulation, and distribution substantially under the control of Abia State,” he stated.
The governor highlighted ongoing efforts by the Abia State Government to ring-fence the Aba industrial cluster and finalize arrangements for the acquisition of the Umuahia electricity axis of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company.
According to him, the move will allow the state to exercise greater control over electricity generation, regulation, and distribution.
Otti also expressed confidence that collaboration between the state government and NDPHC would make it possible to transmit electricity directly from the Alaoji Power Plant to the eight local government areas outside the Aba corridor.
He added that the initiative is expected to improve electricity supply to homes, hospitals, schools, and industries across the state, while boosting productivity and economic growth.
The governor maintained that Abia State is positioning itself to become a leader in energy independence and infrastructure development in Nigeria.
