Abuja — The African Democratic Congress has clarified that newly elected state executives and other party officers will not assume office until the expiration of the tenure of current officials and their formal inauguration.
In a statement shared by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC stressed that the transition process remains governed by its constitution and must be strictly followed.
“The tenure of all newly elected State Executives and other party officers shall not commence until the expiration of the tenure of the current executives and their formal inauguration by the Party on May 12, 2026, or on any later date that may be officially communicated,” the statement read.
The party further emphasised that existing officials remain in charge until the process is fully completed.
“For the avoidance of doubt, all existing executives remain the duly recognised officers of the Party until the completion of this constitutional transition process,” it added.
The ADC also cautioned newly elected officials against actions that could disrupt party order or create uncertainty within its structure.
“Accordingly, all newly elected executives, particularly at the state level, are advised to take note and desist from any action, representation, or conduct that may contravene this clear constitutional directive or create confusion within the Party structure,” the statement said.
Reaffirming its position, the party noted that it remains committed to internal discipline and due process, stressing adherence to its constitution as it manages the transition.
The clarification follows the conduct of the party’s recent state congresses held in early April 2026, during which new state executives and chairmen were elected across the federation.
The exercise, described by the African Democratic Congress as peaceful and in line with its constitution, produced a fresh set of state leadership structures ahead of the party’s planned inauguration.
Abdullahi confirmed that the newly elected officials—comprising state chairmen and executive committees—are to be formally inaugurated on May 12, 2026, following the completion of the transition process.
