I Take Responsibility For Cattle Still Roaming Abuja Streets – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accepted responsibility for the continued sight of cattle roaming parts of Abuja despite efforts by authorities to address the issue.

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, Wike acknowledged public concerns over the presence of cattle on major roads and within the city, admitting that the situation falls under his watch as FCT Minister.

“I take responsibility for cattle still roaming Abuja streets,” Wike said while responding to questions on the lingering issue.

The minister’s remarks come months after he vowed to end the movement of cattle within the nation’s capital, describing the practice as inconsistent with Abuja’s status as a modern city.

At an earlier engagement, Wike had insisted: “We cannot allow cows inside the city.”

Despite those assurances, residents have continued to report sightings of herds of cattle in several parts of Abuja, raising concerns about traffic safety, environmental sanitation and the enforcement of existing regulations.

Wike explained that the FCT Administration has been engaging herders and other stakeholders in search of a lasting solution rather than relying solely on enforcement measures. He noted that discussions are ongoing to ensure that cattle movement is restricted and properly managed.

The minister also stressed that his administration remains focused on improving infrastructure and public services across the Federal Capital Territory, while acknowledging that some challenges still require sustained attention.
