The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced a major restructuring within the Nigeria Police Force, with the launch of a new unit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and the disbandment of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams nationwide.
The announcement was made during a meeting with senior police officers, where the police chief outlined measures aimed at strengthening operational efficiency and improving the force’s response to serious crimes.
According to the IGP, the newly established VCRU will be deployed across all states and the Federal Capital Territory to tackle violent crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and related offences. The unit is expected to function under the supervision of state Commissioners of Police, who will be responsible for its operations.
He explained that the initiative is part of efforts to promote intelligence-led policing, adding that officers assigned to the unit have undergone specialized training in tactical operations, intelligence gathering, and adherence to human rights standards.
The decision to scrap SWAT, he noted, is intended to streamline police tactical structures, eliminate duplication of roles, and address concerns about the conduct and effectiveness of existing units.
The IGP also emphasized that strict oversight mechanisms would guide the operations of the new unit, warning that misconduct or abuse of power by personnel would not be tolerated.
In addition, police commands nationwide have been directed to strengthen collaboration with communities as part of broader efforts to enhance trust, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure public safety.
